Ned Schwing mentioned in his reference guide to the Product 1890 & 1906 that Winchester commenced evidence marking them in 1908… I have no idea if that is certainly correct, but will presume that it's. The “WP” proof mark was utilized once the barrel and receiver were being mated, assembled and completed. This is very obvious over the firearms made during the late teens as a result of early 30s when the blue flaked (popped) off in the event the evidence was struck over the receiver frame.
